This procedure has proven to be safe and effective in all properly selected patients.

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure designed to remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body resistant to reduction by diet or exercise. This procedure is commonly used to reshape the chin and neck, torso, arms, upper abdomen and/or lower abdomen, buttock, flanks, hips, and knees. Most of us gain one pound per year due to the slowing of the metabolism after age 25. Unfortunately, these extra pounds are usually accumulated around the waist in men and in the buttock and thigh areas of women. Liposuction is not a substitute for weight reduction. For best results, patients should be relatively close to their ideal weight for their body frame. This surgery is also not recommended for persons who have poor circulation and/or various other skin problems.

Although youthfully firm, elastic skin will generally give good results, liposuction can be performed with great success on the over fifty group. Regardless of age, because loose or sagging skin will not easily reshape, additional surgery may be recommended to remove the excess skin and tighten muscles; therefore, Dr. Apesos may recommend multiple procedures over time to achieve the desired shape. Be realistic about your expectations!

At the beginning of your procedure, Dr. Apesos will mark the areas chosen for treatment. The incision is just large enough to insert a hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is attached at the opposite end to a machine creating a very strong vacuum. The surgeon then manipulates the cannula to loosen and remove the fat deposits and fluids. The procedure can be done in a surgeon's office, an outpatient surgery facility, or an accredited hospital.

Before your operation, you will be placed under local or general anesthesia. The type of anesthesia chosen depends on your personal anxiety level. Occasionally, additional incisions are necessary to remove all the areas of fat. During the liposuction procedure, you will probably receive intravenous fluids because you will lose fluid along with fat during the surgery.

Tumescent liposuction techniques are used for the removal of fatty tissue through tiny punctures in the skin. The injected solution expands and magnifies the fat cells, making removal of a larger volume of fat cells possible without the need for any blood transfusions. The fatty tissue removed during liposuction can be recycled for use in other cosmetic procedures. Be sure to ask Dr. Apesos to describe its use for other cosmetic enhancements.

The newer ultrasonic liposuction technique is routinely used Dr. Apesos to remove larger volumes of fat with less bleeding, bruising, and skin discoloration. Dr. Apesos can determine which technique will provide you with the best result. Of course, your preferences and requirements are always considered carefully. Postoperative weight gain will surely create new fatty deposits in existing fat cells, but since the body does not regenerate fat cells after puberty, fat cells removed from problematic areas during liposuction are removed for life. When patients follow a nutritious, disciplined diet and maintain an active lifestyle that includes plenty of exercise, the new contours will be maintained.

Liposuction can improve your appearance and enhance your self-confidence, putting you in smaller clothing!
